Voice Product Innovation Challenge - Product Management

Based in our Consumer Business Unit, our RollsVoice product area owns the Spotify voice experience within the mobile app. Think: 'Play David Bowie’ or ‘Show me my playlists’'. Our goal is to enable users to quickly and easily manage their audio session via voice interactions (e.g. navigating between sets of music, curating your collection, discovering new music, among others). Lately, we've been heavily focused on the specific value proposition of using voice to control Spotify while driving.

Application Deadline

Unlike other Spotify surfaces like the Home Page, Voice does not have much visual real estate to hook in and remind users of its availability and benefits. This is compounded in the car context where users don't have much visual or tactile attention to spare. Our challenge is to develop a strategy and execution plan for how and when to engage with users to establish and grow voice habits.


Factors to Consider

1. For scoping purposes, assume you’ll work with a squad of ~2-4 engineers to implement your plan


2. You should feel free to explore solutions across multiple surfaces and mechanisms (e.g. push notifications, audio messages, emails, etc. - this is not an exhaustive list)


3. Consider both the 'out of the box' experience (awareness/trial) and the ongoing relationship users have with the feature (engagement/retention)


4. Minimizing driver distraction is paramount during in-car moments


5. Please respect user privacy! We're able to leverage user data to personalize experiences, but make sure your solution doesn't publicly expose a user's personally identifiable information (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/p/personally-identifiable-information-pii.asp)

Challenge Format

Please submit your solution in the format of a powerpoint or Google slides. Make sure your solution includes the following:


1. Develop a strategy for how we should approach onboarding and ongoing education for Voice users (particularly those who use Spotify while driving)


2. Create a 3-6 month roadmap or execution plan that will help make progress towards your strategic goals


3. Articulate how we would know if we have succeeded or failed
